Finasteride is used in the treatment of hereditary hair loss in men (male pattern baldness, a common condition characterised by thinning scalp hair that can result in a receding hairline or balding at the top of the head).
Finasteride 1 mg is an oral drug with 90% effectiveness in treating bald men. The medication is not recommended for women.
The active ingredient is finasteride. It falls in the class of 5-alpha reductase inhibitor or a DHT blocker. The tablets reduce the conversion of the male hormone testosterone into Dihydrotestosterone. This inhibits the shrinking of hair follicles, thus reducing male pattern baldness. Once the conversion process reduces, men notice a significant change in hair growth.
